Focus on a race Interview

Hello, on November 27 2011, you’ll be organizing the Valencia Divina Pastora Marathon. Can you tell us where it is located?

The location is really innovative regarding past marathons. The City of Arts and Sciences, an avant-garde and spectacular architectural enclave, will be the epicenter of all the activities, both the Marathon’s and the ones concerning Expo Sport Valencia, which is due prior to the race.

Runners will finish the race literally running on water, in front of the Príncipe Felipe Museum and through a more-than-150-metre-long-and-8-metre-wide platform, turning the arrival into one of the most fascinating ever seen in a marathon.

How old is the race and why was it created in the first place?

This will be the 31st marathon –the first one was held the 29th of March 1981– and its story is closely linked to the Sociedad Deportiva Correcaminos (Correcaminos Sports Society), one of the first sports clubs to embrace amateur athletics by the end of the 70’s.

This time, it’ll be really special since it means the birth of a new project: the date has been changed (to have the best weather conditions); the route has been changed (to make it faster and take advantage of the most emblematic places in the city); and it has also had a significant international presence.

What kind of route have you set up for the runners? How would you describe it?

Runners will find Divina Pastora Valencia Marathon ideal to beat their own times –without a doubt, one of the flattest in Europe–.

Furthermore, the route will pass through some emblematic enclaves in the city –like the Formula 1 Grand Prix Circuit or the America’s Cup area–, as well as through the old quarter. A striking mix of history and modern art. And the end, as already said, will take place at the City of Arts and Sciences.

How many runners do you expect on Sunday morning? What type of runners do you plan to attract?

We are expecting about 5,000 runners taking to the start line. In any case, we expect 20% of runners to be foreigners. Italy, France, United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium are the countries that provide the most runners.

Do you organize other races during the Week-End? If so, on what distances?

Yes, we do. Apart from the Marathon, a parallel 10K race will be carried out simultaneously, in which about 10,000 amateur runners will take part. Marathon and 10K athletes will race on entirely separate lanes, but the image of the beginning of the race at the same place will be unforgettable.

At that time of the year, what kind of weather can we expect?

Temperature during that month in Valencia is perfect to practice running (between 12 and 17 degrees.) November is an ideal season to practice long-distance disciplines. The light the city exudes and its closeness to the Mediterranean Sea work as a heater during most of the year.

Have you planned festivities around the marathon?

Yes, there will be a lot of parallel activities to the Marathon. The most important one is Expo Sport Valencia, a fair that is aimed at getting more than 20,000 visitors together, on November 25 and 26 at the City of Arts and Sciences.

It’ll be the meeting place for the city’s sports network and industry, a forum for professionals, amateurs and audience in general. Around the fair there will be some presentations and chats about running, live music and recreational activities for the entire family.

The race finished, what advice would you give a runner who has never been to Valencia before? A good restaurant, a fancy sightseeing?

Valencia is a city with plenty of culture and gastronomy to offer. Being that close, I wouldn’t miss any of the attractions in the City of Arts and Sciences, where all runners and their families will get a discount.

There are also some other interesting places like: Carmen neighborhood, Malvarrosa Beach, L’albufera… And, most important of all, paella is a dish everyone should definitely try.

In a single sentence, what would you tell the readers of ahotu Marathons to make them register for the Valencia Divina Pastora Marathon?

We can assure them that here it’ll be easier for them to beat their times an at the same time to live a wonderful tourist experience showing all Valencia attractions.
